Typing Speed for Data Entry

By Bright Coding · · 1 min read

Data entry is less about prose and more about codes, references and numbers. Speed still matters, but the shape of the work is different.

What to practise

Train the number row until digits are automatic, then practise mixed alphanumeric references such as SKU-48291 and dates like 2026-01-15. Decimal points, thousands separators and currency formats are worth dedicated drills because they combine numbers with punctuation.

Measure the right thing

Character-based metrics suit data entry better than WPM, since records are not made of dictionary words. Track characters per minute and error rate together, and treat any accuracy drop as a signal to slow down.

No single score guarantees a job: requirements differ by employer and should always be checked in the job description. What you can control is a habit of clean, consistent entry.

Frequently asked questions

Is CPM or WPM used for data entry? +

Data entry is often measured in keystrokes or characters per hour, so CPM is a closer match than WPM.

How important is accuracy for data entry? +

Critical. A single wrong digit can invalidate a whole record, so accuracy takes priority over speed.
