WPM Calculator
Already know how many words you typed? Enter the numbers below to calculate your words per minute. The calculator returns gross WPM, net WPM with errors removed, and your accuracy percentage.
What this tool gives you
Gross and net speed
See both your raw output and your error-adjusted score side by side.
Accuracy percentage
Understand how many of your attempted words were correct.
Flexible time input
Enter time in minutes, seconds or both — the calculator normalises everything to minutes.
Clear reference bands
A general speed band is shown so you can gauge where your result sits, with a reminder that real job requirements vary.
How the WPM formula works
Gross WPM measures raw output: divide the number of words typed by the time taken in minutes. If you typed 250 words in 5 minutes, your gross speed is 50 WPM.
Gross WPM vs net WPM
Net WPM subtracts your mistakes before dividing, so it reflects usable output rather than raw speed. Untyped words reduce net speed, which is why accuracy matters as much as pace.
Why accuracy is shown separately
Accuracy is calculated from the words you got right against the total words attempted. A fast score with low accuracy is usually less useful than a slightly slower score with high accuracy.

General guidance places the average typist around 40 WPM, comfortable office use around 40-60 WPM, and 60-80 WPM as fast. Requirements differ widely by employer and role, so treat these as broad reference points rather than rules.
Gross WPM is words typed divided by time. Net WPM subtracts your errors before dividing, so it measures correct output.
Accuracy is the proportion of attempted words that were correct: (words − errors) ÷ words × 100.
This calculator works from words. If you have a character count instead, use the typing speed calculator, which converts characters to words using the standard five-character word.
